Godzilla vs. Kong has a rocky development, first scheduled for release on May 29, 2020, then being moved back to March 13, 2020, only to be postponed again to November 20, 2020, and finally to May 21, 2021. It was then rescheduled for March 26, 2021, before finally arriving in American cinemas on March 31, 2021. Additionally, the film was streamed simultaneously on HBO Max until April 30, 2021.

Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields wrote the script, which Adam Wingard directed. It was written by Borenstein, Dougherty and Shields. After Ghidorah's rampage, Godzilla and Kong face off in Godzilla vs. Kong, which takes place five years after King of the Monsters.

Godzilla vs. Kong pits two of the world's most feared monsters against one other in a fight that might decide the destiny of the whole planet. Jia, an orphaned child with whom Kong has created a unique and intense relationship, joins Kong and his guards on a treacherous adventure to locate his rightful home. However, they find themselves in the path of a Godzilla infuriated and wreaking havoc on the planet. Godzilla and Kong are the only live Titans on Earth in 2024, five years after Godzilla battled and destroyed his alien adversary Ghidorah for dominion in 2019. Skull Island's climate has become unstable as a result of Ghidorah's storm combining with the storm cell that is always surrounding the island, forcing Monarch to confine Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulated the island's environment, with the help of an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia, who is deaf and can communicate with Kong via sign language.

Following the assault, the public has turned against Godzilla, who is no longer seen as humanity's savior. Madison Russell, now an adult and a follower of Bernie's podcast, is concerned when she hears about Godzilla's latest assault at her school. She attempts unsuccessfully after school to reason with her widowed father Mark (who is serving as Monarch's director) about a potential lead on the source of Godzilla's rampage, but he ignores all she says, stating merely that beasts, like humans, may evolve. Madison later enlists the aid of her closest friend Josh Valentine to track down the person responsible for Godzilla's rampage and uncover the mysteries of Apex.

For a strong energy source, Apex founder and CEO Walter Simmons employs Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist. Nathan is cautious at first since his brother attempted to investigate the Hollow Earth and was killed by an anti-gravity field within the tunnel. Walter says Apex has constructed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, customized aircraft capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure.

The Titan arrives and attacks the soldiers before causing the barge to capsize, almost drowning Kong and the other passengers on board. As a result, Nathan frees Kong by cutting the chains that bind him, allowing him to fight Godzilla under the surface for long enough to swim up to the top and overturn the barge, saving the lives of the passengers. Then Godzilla leaps onto the deck of a nearby aircraft copyright to engage in combat with Kong. In order for Kong to successfully force Godzilla back into the ocean, fighter planes must properly distract Godzilla. King Kong rushes from the aircraft copyright in order to dodge the atomic explosion, but Godzilla grabs him by the tail and drags him into the ocean, where he plans to drown the Titan.

However, Godzilla is confused by depth charges, allowing Kong to surface for air.

Nathan, seeing no other choice, determines that the crew should instead shut off all of the ships' power in order to fool Godzilla into believing that he has destroyed them and Kong has been beaten, which they finally succeed in doing. Godzilla looks about at the shattered fleet with a puzzled expression on his face and then swims away, certain that he has triumphed. As a result of realizing that Godzilla may resurface if the ships are reactivated, the survivors adjust their plans and instead fly Kong to a Hollow Earth entrance point in Antarctica, the location where Ghidorah was first frozen. Jia reveals to Kong that his house is via the front door, but that he is apprehensive about going through it.

Walter intends to vanquish Mechagodzilla by harnessing the power of the Hollow Earth. Apex is assaulting Godzilla because he and the Titans are being replaced by humans. Mechagodzilla is being controlled by Ren, who is seated within Apex's severed Ghidorah head five years after it was obtained from Alan Jonah.

After that, Kong and Nathan's team keep going on their journey. They reach their destination at a huge stone temple that once belonged to Kong's ancestors. In the movie, Kong finds an ancient axe made from the dorsal plate of a dead member of Godzilla's race as he explores inside. Then, he sits on top of a huge throne on the inside of the cave. Kong learned that the same power source that Nathan's team found can also recharge the axe. The Apex team, on the other hand, uses spider-like drones to get the power source and send it back to their base in Hong Kong, even though Ilene says that Apex can't just take the power source. Maia has her guards aim their guns at Nathan's team, only for Kong to angrily bellow at them in their defense. In the meantime, Mechagodzilla sends Godzilla a signal. When Godzilla senses the machine's activation, he heads right for Hong Kong.

While Josh and Bernie try in vain to disable the ravaging robot remotely and Madison calls on Mark for assistance, Godzilla and Mechagodzilla fight, with Godzilla tiring from his earlier battle against Kong, but Mechagodzilla eventually gets the better of the fight, knocking Godzilla over and burning him. While Mechagodzilla proceeds to overpower and seriously beat Godzilla, Nathan, Ilene, and Jia approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia notices a slowing of his pulse. In order to restart Kong's heart, Ilene tells Nathan that they can't produce a charge large enough to do so, but Nathan, remembering what Maia said earlier about the HEAVs producing a charge big enough to power Las Vegas for seven days, detonates the craft and releases a huge electrical charge, which instantly revives Kong...

Jia attempts to persuade Kong that Godzilla isn't truly his adversary when he wakes up and watches the fight between the two monsters. Jia discloses to Kong that Mechagodzilla, not Godzilla, is the "real" threat, despite Kong's skepticism at first. In the end, Kong accepts and sets aside his resentment before going into fight to support Godzilla while he fixes his dislocated arm.

Later, Monarch established an observation post in the Hollow Earth. Ilene, Nathan, and Jia happen to spot Kong on his morning walk one day. Kong climbs atop a rock, banging his chest and embracing Jia as his new home and realm in his screaming proclamation of himself as King of the Hollow Earth.

Godzilla vs. Kong has received favorable reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has 341 reviews, 254 of them fresh, and a "Tomatometer" score of 74 percent fresh as of April 16, 2021. The site's reviewers' consensus feature argues that "Delivering squarely on its title, Godzilla vs. Kong swats away character development and human drama to deliver all the spectacle you'd expect from giant monsters slugging it out."

On April 17, 2021, it was reported that despite still somewhat depressed box office due to the pandemic, Godzilla vs. Kong had surpassed the total box office of the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

With Chandler's presence in King Kong, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Godzilla vs. Kong, this resulted in the actor's unique distinction of being the only individual to be present in the cast of a King Kong picture, a Godzilla film, and a crossover feature between the two.
